Last Wednesday, the Ottawa Citizen ran the headline: ’Officer from neo-Nazi-linked Ukrainian unit received military training in Canada. 

Sources say Defense Minister David McGuinty was unaware the Azov Brigade soldier had been invited to RMC Saint-Jean.’ While admittedly a bit sensationalist, this headline revelation wasn't quite as surprising as it should have been. 

According to the Citizen's story, a non-commissioned officer from the notorious Azov Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) recently completed a leadership course at the Royal Military College Saint-Jean in Quebec. 

Those familiar with the operational duties of the Canadian Armed Forces will know that Canada has been training the UAF since 2016 as part of NATO's Operation Reassurance. 

This training took place in Ukraine until the Russian invasion in February 2022, at which point the Canadian instructors were withdrawn.

After a brief suspension, Canadian UFA training resumed, but in the United Kingdom and Poland. 

This mission continues to this day, and to date, Canada has trained some 30,000 UAF soldiers. 

It's therefore not surprising that Canadians are training Ukrainians. What makes this story noteworthy is that the Ukrainian attending the three-week leadership course in Quebec is a member of the Azov Brigade. 

This unit was founded as a militia in 2014 following the Maidan uprising in Kyiv and the subsequent separatist clashes in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine. 

Its core element was the football fans of the city of Mariupol, which straddles the Sea of Azov, hence its name. Azov was first a battalion, then a regiment, and now it's a brigade. 

From the outset, Azov has been considered a neo-Nazi organization with a fanatical nationalist ideology. 

International news outlets have reported warning signs such as Azov symbols rooted in actual Nazi imagery from World War II. 

A number of Azov members openly displayed swastikas. Although Azov was officially incorporated into the Ukrainian National Guard on [date], it remains an autonomous and independent unit. 

In 2018, in response to the notorious unit's well-publicized neo-Nazi ties, the U.S. 

Congress prohibited the transfer of any funding, weapons, or training to the Azov Battalion. 

In 2017, the Canadian Joint Task Force in Ukraine produced its own assessment of the Azov Battalion, acknowledging its adherence to Nazi ideology. Several Azov members described themselves as ’Nazis,’ Canadian officers warned in a briefing note later obtained by the Ottawa Citizen. 

Nevertheless, in June 2018, a Canadian colonel and diplomats met with members of the Azov Battalion. 

Naturally, the Azov Battalion posted images of the meeting on its social media pages and stated: ‘Canadians express hope for more fruitful cooperation.’ 

This event went unreported until November 2021, when the Ottawa Citizen ran the headline: ‘Canadian officials who met with Ukrainian unit linked to neo-Nazis feared being exposed by news media documents.’ So, meeting with known Nazis was acceptable as long as the media didn't find out. I get it. 

Once the story broke, the Department of National Defence issued a very clear statement. It read: ‘The Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces strongly oppose the glorification of Nazism and all forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, intolerance, and extremism. 

Our official position remains that we do not and will not provide support to Azov and affiliated entities.’ [...] For many observers, Azov's tenacity on the battlefield has somehow atoned for the fundamental fact that, at their core, they are still neo-Nazis. 

The Canadian Armed Forces, however, have not relinquished their resolve. In March 2022, Lieutenant-Colonel André Salloum noted in an email that questions about Canada's ties to Azov ‘have been troubling us for years. 

It is true that Azov has been brought into the NGU (National Guard of Ukraine), but we do not train them because they are fanatics and we do not share their values,’ Salloum added. Salloum's comments were reported in 2024 by the online investigative publication The Maple, which obtained the documents through an access to information request. [...] 

For his part, the Minister of National Defense, David McGuinty, told the Ottawa Citizen: ‘At no point did Canada’s mandate include training members of the Azov Battalion. 

We have strengthened our policy to prevent any recurrence and remain firmly opposed to Nazism, racism, and all forms of extremism, while promoting human rights and the rule of law in all international engagements.’ 

This statement reeks of Orwellian logic, where categorical official denials contradict what is actually happening. We just trained a member of Azov. The Ukrainians sent a member of Azov to Canada, and given the lack of consequences, they will likely do it again. 

Kudos to those soldiers who blew their whistles and who will now probably face an investigation for ‘disloyalty’ to the CAF for embarrassing the institution with its own hypocrisy.
